China: 110 arrested in crackdown of illegal pork sales

Chinese authorities have arrested 110 people in relation to the sale of pork from pigs that died due to disease, reported xinhuanet.com.

According to the report the Ministry of Public Security, all in all police had busted 11 groups, which had been operating since 2008, purchasing pigs that had died due to illness from livestock farms at low prices. The pork then went to markets in 11 provinces or processed into bacon, ham or cooking oil for sale.

The ministry also said that the police have confiscated over 1,000 tonnes of contaminated pork and 48 tonnes of oil processed from the pork and other illegal meats. They confirmed that 75 people have been prosecuted and that several food quarantine personnel have also been sent to prosecuting organisations for possible duty-related crimes.
