Updated: SPACE 2015 - Highlights & novelties

This year’s edition of the annual French show for animal husbandry SPACE, in Rennes, had a great deal of excitement to offer – both on the showgrounds and outside. Themes among innovations: using RFID technology to follow individual pigs and ventilation solutions.

  • Empty aisles between the halls – what has happened? In fact, this picture makes things look more dramatic than in was, but visitor numbers were low in the beginning of the day...

  • This was mostly caused by protesting farmers. In France, loud protests are often the way to voice discontent, and this year especially, the farmers are not happy about prices paid for milk and meat. Protests have been going on all summer and even outside the showgrounds the farmers continued to express their grudgings.

  • Several innovations in the pig sector were awarded with 2 Innov'SPACE stars. Aqualab is a water consumption control system, currently still mostly intended for use in research stations. By measuring a pig's water consumption after all, it is possible to figure out in an early stage whether it's suffering from a disease. The device, developed by French automation company Asserva, recognises which pigs drink using RFID ear tags.

  • Another 2 star award went to the Netherlands, the company Combiboard introduced these big hollow PVC panels, which can be used as components to construct a pig house. However, these being hollow means that they can be filled with concrete, allowing them to be used as more permanent, stable construction walls. Simultaneously they are easy to clean.

  • French company Aquadis won a 2-star award for its iDose, an interface between a pulse water meter and a pump. The innovation allows for the easy use (reading and adjustment of the dose) of the metering pumps.

  • For this innovation, we needed to look up – Rose Charpente's Flud'R System is a device which can be installed inside a pig house ceiling to ensure that fresh air is circulated. The device, fully made of durable plastic, works without electricity as it is depending on the air pressure, air will be circulated. This also makes it easy to clean.

  • No innovation, but definitely a new name! On July 1, French artificial insemination company Cobiporc teamed up with Amélis-Evolution to become France's largest pig AI company, with 2,600,000 doses produced every year. The newly formed organisation is called Yxia and was proudly showing itself at SPACE.

  • Asserva also presented this Filtranet (here at model scale), a filtration unit in stainless steel, in a secluded and soundproof box. The company received 1 star for this innovation.

  • Phileo Lesaffre Animal Care launched Program Neonate for pigs. Following an earlier example in ruminants, the programme focuses on offering solutions to make sows perform better before, during and after parturition.

  • Nedap's livestock equipment division shared the Pig Performance Testing unit at SPACE. This is currently mainly for breeding units, but keeps very careful track of an animal's growth on individual level and offers a wealth of information.
