Philippines lift US/Mexican pork ban

05-05-2009 | |

The Philippine government has lifted a ban on pork imports from Mexico and the United States, saying there is no threat that the H1N1 flu could be transmitted from animals to humans.

Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap said the move is meant to soften the impact of the flu alert on the hog industry, noting that pork prices have dropped steadily during the scare.

The Philippines has reported no cases of H1N1 flu.

However, it has advised against travelling to Mexico and called on its tens of thousands of workers in Hong Kong to take extra precautions after the first confirmed case was reported there.
