Brazilian regions FMD-free

Eleven Brazilian regions have been reported to be clear of Foot-and-Mouth disease with vaccination.

The World Organization for Animal Health's (OIE) declaration has urged on the resumption of meat exports from the regions.

Cleared after three years
It is almost three years after an outbreak of FMD in the states Mato Grosso do Sul and Parana pushed the OIE to suspend the Distrito Federal and the states of Bahia, Espirito Santo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Sergipe, Tocantins, Goias, Mato Grosso, Parana and Sao Paulo.

However, these regions are now considered FMD-free with vaccination.

According to Brazilian Agriculture Secretary Renhold Stephanes, the OIE's decision will pose beneficial to the reopening of new export markets for Brazilian meat. USDA officials will visit the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina early next month to assess fresh beef and pork production conditions there.
