French Minister pledges aid for pig producers

An additional sum of €10m has been granted to pig producers by French agriculture minister, Michel Barnier.

Originally, the government had offered €6m, but in view of the "persistent problematic situation in the industry" the amount was raised a further €4m.

€16m to-date has been granted to the pork production industry. €6m is destined for the reduction of taxes. The remaining €10m will serve as an interest subsidy.

The ministry is targeting primarily young farmers and new arrivals to the industry in order to strengthen the structure of French pork production.

This latest move is in response to a call by Inaporc, the French pig industry association, for immediate measures to alleviate the grave situation among French pig breeders.
