Danish pig industry reduced antibiotics usage by 19% in 2011

29-02-2012 | | |

In 2011, the total Danish pig industry managed to reduce usage of antibiotics by 19% in comparison to 2010.

Total volume decreased from 100.3 tonnes to 81.4 tonnes, Vetstat figures revealed. Vetstat is responsible in Denmark for monitoring the usage of antibiotics.

The decrease has pleased the Danish industry, as the reduction figures were reached despite a strong growth in pig numbers. The so-called ‘yellow card system’ was one reason for the 2011 success. This system provides in extra surveillance when pig farmers have a high usage of antibiotics.
