Russia bans pork imports from Belarus
Russian veterinary watchdog Rosselhoznadzor has introduced temporary import restrictions on pork products from Belarus.
Alexei Saurin, the Deputy Head of Rosselkhoznadzor, sent a letter to the Chief State Veterinary Inspector of Belarus Yuri Pivovarchik, which states that, in accordance with the agreement of the Customs Union on veterinary and sanitary measures due to the unfavourable situation in Belarus on the African swine fever from 30 August 2013 Russia has introduced temporary restrictions on the import of pigs and pork products from Belarus.
“The limitations will remain either until the disease’s eradication in the territory of Belarus, or rules for defining zoological and sanitary status (compartmentalisation) of Belarusian piggeries are adopted, or the Eurasian Economic Commission adopts a standard legal act of direct action, which would regulate the single procedure for compartmentalisation for Customs Union member states,” a press release from Rosselkhoznadzor said.
Russia is the main market for Belarusian pork products. In 2012, Belarus exported to Russia 60,000 tonnes of pork, worth a total of US$200mln, according to General Director of the National Meat Association of Russia Sergey Yushin.
