Philippines implements retail price ranges for meat

The Philippines Department of Agriculture (DA) says it’s going to strictly implement suggested retail price ranges for pork and chicken to keep costs stable, especially during the coming holiday season.

Agriculture Undersecretary Salvador Salacup said the price ranges are the most reasonable price levels of the respective commodities for a given period and are guides to all stakeholders, “gate-to-plate.”

The suggested retail price (SRP) for whole dressed chicken, is P135 to P145 a kilo; pork kasim (shoulder) is P160 to P165 a kilo; and pork liempo (belly), P170 to P175 a kilo. These SRPs were drawn up after agriculture officials met last month with hog and chicken industry stakeholders.

Regular morning visits to retail outlets will be made by the DA’s Agricultural Marketing Assistance Service (Amas), Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS) and the DTI (Department of Trade and Industry) to ensure that sellers follow the SRPs.

Undersecretary Salacup said that 8,000 metric tons (MT) of chicken would arrive starting this weekend up to January 31, 2010, and another 8,000 MT of pork also this December through imports coming from the United States, Canada and other Asian sources.
