Russia to increase pork production by 2012

During the next three year’s Russia will increase the level of the domestic poultry and pork production by 40% and 32% respectively according to the Russian Ministry of Economic Development estimates.

It is noted that these segments of the Russian meat market will keep growing as a result of technological modernisation of production and the recovery of consumer demand.

Thus, the growth of production will lead to further import volume reductions. The share of pork imports by 2012 will not exceed 13% (compared with 27% in 2008), while poultry – 15% (compared with 35% in 2008).

In general, according to the ministry the level of livestock and poultry for slaughter production this year will grow by 5,8% however cattle production by 2012 will decline by 3% to 1,7 million tonnes.

According to official data, in January-August 2009, Russia reduced the imports of fresh and frozen meat in physical terms by 26,9% compared to the same period last year – to 757,300 tonnes, said the Federal Customs Service (FCS).

Poultry meat volumes decreased by 29,4% – to 556,500 tonnes. In value terms the volume of red meat imports amounted to US$ 2,470 billion, while poultry to US$ 615,3 millions.
