British pork to be banned in Korea
There is a possibility British pigs and pork are to be banned in Korea. This comes after a foot-and-mouth outbreak at a farm in southern England.
British pigs and pork currently being imported to Korea are detained in quarantine due to the disease found, said the Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry. British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, has said that authorities were doing “everything in our power†to track the source of the disease. Our first priority has been to act quickly and decisively,†he added.
British pork imported to Korea accounted for 0.5 percent of Korea’s total pork imports through July. “We are doing everything in our power to look at the scientific evidence and to get to the bottom of what has happened and then to eradicate this disease,” Brown said.
It is the first known case since the outbreak in 2001.
