End to sale of pigs castrated without sedation

15-06-2007 | |

Supermarkets in the Netherlands will stop selling meat from pigs that have been castrated without sedation as from 2009.

This announcement was made on Wednesday by CBL, the organisation of Dutch supermarkets.

Out of time
According to the CBL, it is ‘out of time to make piglets suffer like this’. Up until now in the Netherlands, piglets were castrated to prevent boar taint in carcasses at slaughter.

The proposal was favoured by the Dutch Party for the Animals, that has two seats in Dutch Parliament.

CBL also announced that there will also be certain requirements for sustainable and responsible catching of fish.
