China plans vaccination drive to stop blue ear epidemic
The peak season for blue ear disease has not even started and yet over 45,000 pigs in China have already been hit.
Chinese government has called for a vaccination drive to control the disease (blue ear / PRRS), saying the disease has killed 18,000 pigs and has assisted in sending pork pricing soaring.
The ministry of agriculture has urged animal medical factories to produce more vaccine and ordered local veterinarians to implement vaccination and disease control measurers. It has also imposed a ban on the sale and transport of sick pigs.
The rising prices, 71.3% on live pigs – 29.3% on pork, prompted the Premier Wen Jiabao to intervene and personally call for measurers to ensure pork supplies, the country’s staple meat.
