Australia: more pig farmers may quit

21-06-2007 | |

There are signs that confidence is low in the Australian pork industry with more pig farmers expected to leave due to high feed grain prices and competition from imports.

Dr Bruce Mullan, Western Australia’s Department of Agriculture and Food, said the industry stands to lose several thousand sows if the exit continues.

“There is an oversupply of product for the market and that has been brought about mainly by record high levels of imports coming in, of product for processing so producer margins at the moment are very, very tight and there are already some producers who have decided to exit the industry.”
