Intervet award for Dr Mark Stevens
Dr Mark Stevens, attached to the Institute of Animal Health, UK, will be awarded the Dieter Lütticken Award for his efforts in ‘replacement, reduction and refining’ of animal testing replacements.
The prize, an amount of €20,000, will be donated to Dr Stevens at a special ceremony during the Sixth World Congress on Alternatives, in Tokyo, Japan in August.
In vitro models
The prize, sponsored by the Dutch animal health company Intervet, is awarded to promote the use of in vitro models as an alternative to animal testing for registration. In addition, the award is meant to support research that prevents the use of animals in safety and quality tests for biological and pharmaceutical products.
Stevens’ laboratory developed several animal models to study pathogenesis of gut bacteria in livestock; moreover, he uses new genetic methodes to analyse the molecular basis of bacterial virulence.
