EU interested in free trade deals in Asia

24-04-2007 | |

Following US initiatives, the European Union (EU) will embark on talks aiming to reach free trade deals with India, South Korea and the members of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The European member states agreed to start negotiations, which the European Commission claims would increase EU exports by approximately €40 billion a year, this week in Luxembourg.

The Commission claims these agreements would add to the EU’s commitment to the multilateral trading system.

Applauded
Earlier this year, a free trade agreement between the USA and South Korea, was hugely applauded by the American pork producers’ council NPPC, as it contained good conditions for pigmeat trade.

Free trade negotiations between the EU and countries in Latin America will also start this year.
