EU pork export subsidies officially granted
The pig industry in the European Union is to receive export subsidies. A final decision on the proposal made at the beginning of last week was taken on Thursday in Brussels.
The majority of EU member states voted for the proposal with Denmark, Sweden and Italy voting against.
The subsidies are valid for all destinations outside the EU. For a carcase, the subsidy amounts to €31.10 per 100kg – fresh or frozen. In addition, this restitution regulation covers pig stomachs with €19.40 granted for every 100kg.
As expected, the private storage regulation no longer counts – as of 28 November.
The subsidies are valid for meat from member states that had been proposed for private storage aid – amounting to around 97,000 tonnes of pigmeat.
European Agriculture Commissioner, Marian Fischer Boel, proposed the initiative at the beginning of last week in order to compensate for the high feed costs in the pig sector.
The Dutch Association for Pig Producers (LTO) has welcomed the decision – hoping that some room will be created in the market.
