Czech pig farmers to demonstrate

19-11-2007 | |

This week, pig producers in the Czech Republic plan demonstrations in Prague in front of the agriculture ministry in protest against lower pig prices.

According to the president of the Czech and Moravian Pig Breeders Union, Jaroslav Hajda, a mass demonstration “cannot be avoided”.

“The current negotiations with agriculture minister Petr Gandalovic have come to nothing,” said Jan Veleba, president of the Czech agriculture chamber in an interview with the Prague business newspaper Hospodarske Noviny.

Pig feed
Expensive feed has rendered pig production in the Czech Republic unprofitable say farmers’ representatives. Pavel Krejcik, head of the sales cooperative of meat producers Centroodbyt, has called for rapid intervention by the Czech state as pigmeat prices on the domestic market could double in the coming year.
