Dutch Piglet export in Europe up 2%

22-10-2007 | |

Piglet exports in Europe are up 2.23% in the first three quarters of this year, according to the Dutch Livestock, Meat and Eggs Board (PVE) as reported in the Agrarisch Dagbladtoday.

Germany remains the largest importer of Dutch piglets. Between 2006 and 2007 an increase of 12.85% of the total amount exported is reported. Export to Belgium has also risen by around 15.69% translating in 46,640 piglets.

Only Spain has reduced its imports by 15% in comparison to last year.

Germany main importer
The Dutch livestock trade considers Germany to be its most important export land. The Netherlands is more than capable of delivering piglets to match the German’s preferences.

Aujeszky’s disease
However, the only obstacle to increasing exports is the Netherlands’ status regarding Aujeszky’s disease. The meat industry currently has chosen an ‘article 9’ status while Germany and its neighbouring countries are all classified as ‘article 10’.

The pig processing industry is in favour of ‘article 10’status, whereas the meat producers are against it as meat exports will run into difficulties if classified under ‘status 10’ should the disease break out.
