Protection against foot-and-mouth disease
The Center for Animal Disease Modeling and Surveillance at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of California-Davis, has launched a nationwide research study, which aims to protect the livestock industry from the devastating effects of foot-and-mouth disease.
Researchers have asked farmers to take part in an online survey to collect any information regarding animal movements and husbandry practices. This information will then be used in a simulation model to predict the duration and magnitude of a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak. This will also help in determining the best strategies for containment and control.
The study is being conducted in collaboration with the National Center for Foreign Animal and Zoonotic Diseases and is supported by the USDA and the Department of Homeland Security.
