No pigs in TV ads, says Chinese government

26-01-2007 | |

A television advert showing pigs has been banned in China because government feared it might offend Muslims.

The ad, by Swiss food company Nestlé and featuring a smiling cartoon wishing the viewers happy new pig year, originally was meant to be shown on China Central Television (CCTV).

Multi-ethnic
Government officials were quoted as saying, “China is a multiethnic country. To show respect to Islam, and upon guidance from higher levels of the government, CCTV will keep any ‘pig’ images off the TV screen.”

The measure made Nestlé make last-minute changes to the advertisement.

The Chinese new year – this year to be the Year of the Pig in Chinese astrology – will start in February.
