IPVS 2012 kicks off on Jeju Island, Korea (with photos)

With a massive ceremony, the 22nd edition of the International Pig Veterinary Society Congress was opened today on Jeju Island, South Korea. The theme of the congress is 'Happy Pigs – Healthy People'.

Dr Won Hyung Lee, IPVS president, welcomed the estimated 3,000 swine veterinarians from over 60 countries worldwide during an opening session with food, drinks and live music. The event was also attended by Suh Kyu Jong, Korean minister for food, agriculture, forestry and fisheries. Both gentlemen have been portrayed below - the top one is Dr Won Hyung Lee, during the opening speech.

Monday will be the start of the scientific programme of the congress. A total of 1,008 papers will be presented, of which 277 oral papers and 731 poster presentations.

Sponsors have drawn up their booths in several halls of the massive ICC Jeju complex.

The bids for the 2016 edition of the biannual congress have also built up their booths. Main contenders are Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Dublin, Ireland; and Beijing, China. The location for the 2016 edition will be chosen at the closing ceremony on Wednesday.

The 2014 edition of the IPVS Congress shall be held in Cancún, Mexico.
