Chinese Government campaigns against illegal slaughterhouses, swill-fed pigs

10-08-2011 | | |

The Chinese government has launched a campaign in order to stop the increase of illegal slaughterhouses, and in relation to this it is also stopping swill-fed pigs from making its way to the market.

The Beijing Animal Health Inspection Institute had discovered some farms in Beijing’s districts of Tongzhou, Shunyi and Fangshan using swill which is a combination of liquid and solid food scraps to feed their pigs.

Dangerous diseases
“The swill has not been properly disposed of on these farms. Pigs eating the waste are likely to carry dangerous diseases, such as Foot-and-Mouth disease,” said a spokesman from the Beijing Animal Health Inspection Institute.

It has been reported that Beijing’s animal health watchdog has stopped approximately 15,000 swill-fed pigs from entering the market between the months of June and August this year.

Chinese law states that it is prohibited to use swill as pig feed.
