Dr S. Ernest Sanford
Dr Sanford became a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1971 after a study at the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph, Canada. Four years later he obtained his diploma in Veterinary Pathology at the same college. Since 1981, he received a pathology specialty board certification at the American College of Veterinary Pathologists.
Before joining Boehringer Ingelheim, he worked as a diagnostic pathologist at the Veterinary Laboratory Services in Ontario, Canada.
Altogether, he wrote over 100 publications in scientific journals, saw 170 scientific abstracts and conference proceedings published and had an additional 110 publications in lay journals.
In addition, he was co-author of the book chapters on Streptococcal Diseases in "Diseases of Swine" - 6th and 7th editions. He also was author of book chapter on Actinobacillus suis in 7th edition of "Diseases of Swine."
The majority of his publications and talks have been on new and emerging diseases occurring in intensively-raised, confinement-reared pigs.
Only two years ago, Dr Sanford received the Howard W. Dunne Memorial Award, awarded by the American Association of Swine Veterinarians.
The 21st International Pig Veterinary Society (IPVS) Congress is over and what an event it was!
IPVS 2010 is just a few short weeks away; we are in the home stretch. Are we ready? In many ways I think we’ve been ready for a long time. We have been preparing for all foreseeable eventualities. The unexpected surprises could still be a little unnerving, and rest assured we know a few surprises will emerge, no matter how well we are prepared, but by the same token we are well positioned to accommodate those surprises.
The Winter Olympics are over and preparations for IPVS in Vancouver are well underway and getting into their final stages. Early bird registrations closed a week a go with 1922 delegates, students and accompanying persons registered. Delegates have registered from more than 60 countries so far and we are projecting to have well over 2000 registered delegates at the IPVS in Vancouver in July.
Long before Canada won the bid in Copenhagen to host IPVS 2010 in Vancouver, IPVS had already had a profound impact on the swine veterinary community in Canada. The decision to mount a bid to host an IPVS in Canada got us to finally organise a national swine veterinary association, the Canadian Association of Swine Veterinarians (CASV).
With 2010 on the doorstep, the organisation of the IPVS in Vancouver, in July, is gradually taking shape. The abstract submission has now started – and for the first time it's entirely web-based.
Over the last few decades we have had several new diseases descend on the pig world threatening its very existence. National/ Federal Governments in most countries have well laid-out plans to deal with foreign animal diseases (FADs) or the various 'listed' diseases that are a threat to the national livestock or animals within that particular country.
The IPVS is plunging into the digital revolution. At this time we are still in the midst of planning and discussing many of the changes we envision. As a result I will hold off going into too much detail on some of the changes and instead, just lift the curtain ever so slightly to give a glimpse of changes that can be expected.
How busy can the life of a professional swine veterinarian be? Dr Ernest Sanford is swine specialist at Boehringer Ingelheim's Vetmedica division in Ontario, Canada – and apart from that he is IPVS president, organising the next congress in Vancouver, BC. On top of that, H1N1 asks some attention…
As most will know by now, Canada will be hosting the next International Pig Veterinary Society (IPVS) Congress in Vancouver, British Columbia, July 18-21, 2010. Several innovations have been added for this 21st IPVS Congress. Since many of the new additions are still not yet finalised, I’ll introduce them a few at a time as they become closer to reality.
Canada will host the 21st International Pig Veterinary Society (IPVS) Congress in Vancouver, British Columbia, July 18-21, 2010. This is the first time the IPVS Congress will be held in Canada and we are planning to have it follow in the footsteps of previous congresses and be yet another invigorating event.
