Reports on the future of the pig industry

Throughout the year, several academical research institutes and governmental agencies around the globe release their projections for the next decade in agriculture. On this page, you will find the latest projections, the majority being from 2009-2018. As soon as updated reports become available, you will be able to find them on this site.

FAPRI 2009 US and World Agriculture Outlook

Released: January 2009
FAPRI, short for Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute, is a dual university research programme, set up by the Iowa State University and the University of Missouri. It gives projections for both the United States and the whole world until 2018, including projections on US pork (breeding, production, consumption and prices). Projections on pork production can be found on page 118 and further; for more on pork consumption turn to page 326.

Released: February 2009
The United States Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service (ERS) launches its long-term projections every year and has done so for quite some years. It focuses on crops, livestock and trade. Especially interesting for the pig industry is the chapter on livestock and an overview of long-term projections for pork in the USA. This includes projections for prices, exports, consumption and the hog inventory. The major contribution on livestock can be found on the pages 44-53.

Released: June 2009
This outlook was launched by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization. The outlook combines many statistical projections from countries around the globe and thus gives global projections for a range of agricultural products. Meat projections (including pork) can be also be found in this document - nice projections are e.g. on pages 90-91.

The link above takes you to a highlight of the outlook. The full 2009 outlook will be available at August 3, 2009. For more information and ordering, click here.

Released: July 2009
This report summarised the three previous ones and aimed to give a comprehensive outlook for the years to come for all agricultural products, like cereals, cotton, rice, meat, dairy products and biofuels. Outlooks for the pork industry can be found on pages 98-103.
