VIV CHINA 2010: Beijing, China

For the seventh time since the year 2000, VIV China is being held in Beijing, 6-8 Sept 2010. There’s no better place for learning about the jaw-dropping pace of development of the Chinese livestock industry, Vincent ter Beek, editor for Pig Progress found out.
Beijing, capital of China, hosts the show for the fourth time, after the first three editions were held in Shanghai.

The city's New China International Exhibition Center, a vast complex at the outskirts of the capital, welcomed approximately 350 exhibitors from 24 countries. More than 240 companies from within China present their agricultural products, and just over 100 come from abroad. Visitors from at least 67 countries are expected.
Five VIP guests jointly opened the show, by an old-fashioned Chinese ribbon cutting ritual.
Then, the crowds could appear in booths, corridors and international platforms.
Several countries presented itself with pavilions, like France ('Faguo' in Chinese), South Korea ('Hanguo') and the Netherlands ('Helan'). One US state, Illinois, also put itself in the spotlights at VIV China.
Muyang, providing feed processing equipment, and headquartered in Yangzhou, Jiangsi province, has already realised turnkey projects in 17 countries, including Brazil, Vietnam, Thailand and Egypt.
New Jeida International, headquartered in Taiwan, and also located in Huizhou, China, focuses on the production of AI equipment, needles and ear tags, mainly for pigs. Growth figures for 2010 are estimated to be possibly as high as 50%.
Poultry (and pig) equipment company Big Herdsman, headquartered in Qingdao, aims to distinguish itself on the Chinese market by producing high quality products. According to its own figures, the company has been growing by 100% for several years now.
Angel Yeast, headquartered in Yichang, Hubei province, is part of a larger company producing baker's yeast. The company has eight different yeast products on the market for animal nutrition and sales have grown by 50% for several years, the company says.
ZhengChang International Machinery and Engineering Company (ZCME), located in Shanghai, produces feed processing equipment and expects future growth to be outside China as this is where the larger feed companies will place their investments. The company aims to realise joint projects.
Qian Shunhua, ZCME R&D, presents the 'Feed Quality Optimize System', an upgrade for its pelleting process - the company introduced a high precision moisture sensor which needs to be installed prior to the actual pelleting. In case the matter is too dry, additional moist can be added by the use of steam.
Of all foreign companies, Moba (the Netherlands) drew a lot of attention to itself with the show's largest booth, showing egg grading and packing machines.
Large international pharmaceutical companies are not present at VIV China, but feed and nutrition companies are strongly present, like e.g. Lesaffre Feed Additives (France)...
Big Dutchman (Germany), has been a big player on the Chinese market for quite some years. A larger article on Chinese pig production, including Big Dutchman equipent, will appear in a near future edition of Pig Progress.
The first day was closed off with an official dinner at the embassy of the Netherlands in Beijing. The dinner, made possible by VNU Exhibitions and the feed joint venture Wellhope De Heus, attracted over 200 people.
Prior to the dinner, an official farewell was given to Dutch agricultural counselor to the embassy in China Henk van Duijn (right) who handed over his post to his successor Marinus Overheul (left).
