US pig exports slow down

//25 Sep 2006
The US' rapid growth of pork exports seems to have come to a halt.
For the first time since January 2003, a decline is visible in pork exports from the US. In the month of July, less pork was exported than a year earlier. In July 2005, 102,000 tonnes of pork were exported, in comparison to 98,000 this year.

Altogether, figures show that the US pork export growth is slowing down. In the first quarter of 2006 US pork exports managed to grow by 22% in comparison to the previous year, but in the second it only was little more than 6%.

Main reason behind this is a reduction in shipments to Japan, that needs less pork after years of extraordinary demand. Exports to both Mexico and Russia also turn out to be less spectacular.
