SA government more involved in pig compartments

//05 Mar 2010
The South African government will in future be involved to a greater extend in the country's compartimentalisation scheme as this will give the scheme more international credibility, the South African Pork Producers Organisation (Sappo) reports.

The final administration will be handled by the national veterinary services but cooperation with and facilitation of private veterinarians on farms would stay the same.

Scientific justification
According to Dr Peter Evans, health officer at Sappo, the reason for the compartments is to facilitate good farming practice and, most importantly, to be able to justify in a scientific manner that South Africa was free of disease and proactive in keeping the country free of disease.

Expectations are that South Africa will be declared PRRS free status by the end of March.
