Russia: protectionism to reduce pig imports

By imposing protectionist measures, Russia aims to cut imports of pigs for slaughter and protect domestic breeders, Sergey Mitin, the Russian deputy minister for agriculture has announced.

"The ministry believes it necessary to set the tariff rate at no less than 35%," Mitin said. "Imported pigs meant for slaugthering represent direct competition to domestic production."

Russia has made agriculture a national priority. Since two years, the number of pigs in Russia has indeed been on the rise again.

The deputy minister said that in 2006 his country imported about 370,000 head of live animals, predominantly pigs. Live pig imports are liable to a tariff rate of 5% of their customs value.
