Romanian firm CarmOlimp expects pork meat exports to EU to account for 9% of turnover

//12 Dec 2011
Last week it was announced that the European Union countries will be getting pork from Romania, as the country has been cleared to start exports of the meat as of 1 January 2012, via a ‘channelled’ pork system. In light of this, Romanian cold meats producer CarmOlimp has stated that it expects pork meat exports in the EU to account for 9% of its 2012 turnover.
Classical Swine Fever has been to blame for the ban on pork exports from Romania and previously swine flu also played a role. However, the issue regarding Classical Swine Fever in Romania has ‘largely improved’ in recent years, said the EU. The last outbreak of Classical Swine Fever in Romania was in 2007. But since the ban on pork meat has been lifted, the company will send pork meat to the EU starting in the first half of 2012.

“After a seven year ban on pork meat exports, the European Commission has decided to resume Romanian producers’ sales. Following this decision, which will greatly help the meat industry in Romania, we expect to start pork exports to EU countries in the first half of next year,” said Valentin Soneriu, general manager of CarmOlimp.
