Pork production in Sweden coming down slightly in first half year

//08 Sep 2011
Pork production in Sweden has come down in the first six months of 2011, to just over 125,000 metric tons – a year-on-year 0.7% decrease.

Altogether, 1.4 million pigs were sent to slaughter in these months, in compariston to over 1.41 million last year. From April to June, 4.2% less pigs have been slaughtered, compared to a 2.2% growth in the first three months of the year, figures of the Swedish agricultural service reveal.

The decrease in the second quarter is believed to be due to a lack of profitability in Swedish pig production. Earlier, the Swedish pig industry cried for help that it was impossible to continue competing with industries in the rest of the EU.

The Swedish pig producers organisation Sveriges Grisproducenter was quoted to say then that this could be related to significantly higher welfare demands in Sweden.
