Russia closed its borders for Polish agricultural problems back in November
last year, since fake compliance documents were found.
Ukraine stopped Polish meat imports in March this year, after it became
clear that the required vet certificates were partly missing.
In case both Ukraine and Russia would lift their bans, consequences will be
positive for the level of Polish pig prices. These were about 15% lower than
spring level in the first six months of 2006. In addition, it would be a relief
for the pig market in the EU as a whole.
From January to June, altogether 469,000 tonnes of pigmeat were processed,
a 17.3% year-on-year increase.
In spite of missing export possibilities to Russia and the Ukraine the
Polish meat sector is clearly moving upward. Some Polish companies managed to
find other markets in the Far East, for instance
Japan.
