Pig herds in Czech Republic and Hungary down

//18 Feb 2009
Not only in Poland, but also in the Czech Republic and Hungary, the total pig herd has decreased within one year.

The reason is the adverse economic situation for pig production, a situation only aggravated by the absence of own capital funding, as well the lack of competitiveness to Western European investors and the power to invest.

In Poland, the total pig herd has decreased by one-fifth to 14.2 million animals.

In the Czech Republic, there were 2.1 million pigs in December 2008, more than half a million animals less than one year earlier. This equals a loss of 20%.

The nummer of piglets decreased as well – even by 23% in comparison to 2007.

For Hungary, statistics from Budapest hint at a reduction of the total pig herd by 13%.
