In the beginning of September, the total pig population was 15.8 million,
an increase of 7.1% in comparison to the same day, one year earlier.
Total slaughter of cattle, pigs and poultry for meat in the period from
January to August 2006 increased by 4% year-on- year to 4.2 million tonnes, the
Russian government said.
