Chinese Pork exports declining sharply

// 27 Jun 2008

Chinese mainland pork exports in the first four months of this year declined sharply due largely to mounting pig raising cost according to figures from the General Administration of Customs, which stated that in the period January to April, mainland China exported 24,000 tonnes of pork, a decrease of nearly 55% compared with the same period last year.

Export value was $ 80 million, down 14%, but the average price rose 95% year-on-year to $ 3,396/t. Of the total exported, 80% or 19,000 tonnes went to Hong Kong, down just under 38%.

A spokesman for the Customs said the May 12 earthquake which jolted the south-western province of Sichuan and claimed more than 69,000 lives would probably drive pork exports down further. Prior to the earthquake, Sichuan accounted for 11% of China's total pork output and nearly one third of national exports.
