Thailand’s pork exports up 9%
// 15 May 2007
Exports to Japan grew 23% to 1,644 tonnes, more than making up for the
reduced exports of frozen pork to Hong Kong, which now bars sales of frozen pork
in fresh pork markets.
Export forecast
Overall, Thailand’s
pork export trend this year looks promising, with shipments anticipated to
increase by 8% to 12,000 tonnes, over last years 11.000.
The onus on
pork exporters this year would be on expanding processed pork shipments to new
markets, including Singapore, South Korea and Europe.
In
March this year, Singapore authorities visited Thailand and certified Thai
processed pork factories.
The government's policy to create a zone, free of Foot-and-Mouth
Disease (FMD), is hoped to help increase exports.
