Classical Swine Fever outbreak in Serbia

An outbreak of Classical Swine Fever (CSF) has been reported in Serbia – 155 pigs died in this outbreak.

The outbreak was noted on November 17, in a breeding herd the village of Veliki Radinci in Vojvodina, near the borders with both Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia. The virus was confirmed on the 19th of November after laboratory tests.

The outbreak was reported to the International Organization for Animal Health (OIE) on November 20, by Dr Zoran Micovic, Chief Veterinary Officer, at the Serbian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management in Belgrade.

At the farm, almost 8,200 pigs were kept, of which 201 were found to be suffering from CSF, a morbidity of 2.45%.

Breeding farm
The breeding pig farm was quarantined; the pigs will be culled in the next few days, the OIE report said. Epidemiological investigation is ongoing in order to identify the source of infection.

The last outbreak of CSF in Serbia dated back from October 2007.
