Canada's agriculture minister Gerry Ritz said, "Access to the Chinese market is excellent news for Canadian pork producers and underlines the importance of recognising international science-based standards."
Ritz issued his comments after concluding a certification agreement with China.
Welcomed news
Edouard Asnong, president of Canada Pork International responded, "This news is welcomed by Canada's pork industry. The federal government has worked tirelessly to reopen this important market for our products."
The new agreement, however, excludes the export of live swine to China, an issue the Canadian government said it hopes to also settle soon.
In 2008, Canada exported CAN$45 million (US$42 million) worth of pork products to China.
