The animals had been causing damage near Townsville, in the North East of Queensland, around Ross River Dam, destroying council property as well as those of residents in the direct neighbourhood.
The city council decided to an aerial shooting operation – with a result of killing 120 feral pigs, significantly reducing numbers and their impact on the dam and properties.
Effective
The method proved considerably more effective than conventional trapping methods, which had captured nine pigs in more than four months.
According to a councillor, the feral pigs had caused severe damage, in particular to the water quality of the city's main water source. The aerial shooting operation was carried out by Townsville Water, which manages the area.
