Smithfield 2nd quarter loss

11 Dec 2009 - Smithfield reported sales of $2.7 billion versus $3.1 billion in the same period last year. The decrease is attributable to lower fresh pork selling prices, exchange rate changes in international operations and significantly lower hog prices in the US hog production business. Read more >>

Pig brain mist caused slaughter worker illness

10 Dec 2009 - The mysterious illness in 24 slaughterhouse workers in Minnesota and Indiana from 2006 to 2008 was caused by an autoimmune response to a mist of pig brain tissue. Doctors at the Mayo Clinic and government public health experts have confirmed this. Read more >>

Zhongpin to open new pork plant in Jan

10 Dec 2009 - Zhongpin's construction of its new chilled and frozen pork processing plant in Tianjin has been accelerated. The new facility will begin initial pork production on January 20. When all the construction phases are completed in 2010, the Tianjin plant will have an annual capacity of 100,000 metric tonnes for chilled and frozen pork. Read more >>
