A new era in ileitis control is developing as the research and commercial farm studies using an ileitis vaccine delivered via drinking water proceed.

An effective disease control strategy is best achieved by a fully integrated approach, involving management, nutrition and, of course, antibiotics. Elanco Animal Health have been busy developing effective prevention strategies against ileitis and are spreading the word throughout the food chain.

A symposium organised in October by Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health signalled the official introduction of the company?s ileitis vaccine across 19 European countries. The audience of over 150 veterinarians were reminded how researchers strove for 20 years to discover Lawsonia intracellularis and how their efforts triggered the work that really matters to producers ? control of the disease.

Two large North American operations have experience in using the vaccine against ileitis, recently launched across 19 European countries. Both companies consider the vaccine to be an extremely effective tool, but have introduced a strict protocol and dedicated personnel to manage its storage, handling and administration.

Porcine proliferative enteropathy (PPE), also known as ileitis, is a common infectious disease that affects weaned pigs of various ages. The disease is often difficult to recognise because the signs are non-specific or lacking, but there are now techniques to diagnose PPE and detect immune responses in affected pigs.

Porcine proliferative enteropathy (PPE), commonly referred to as ileitis, is an intestinal infectious disease characterised by thickening of the aboral small intestinal mucosa due to enterocyte proliferation associated with the presence of an intracellular bacterium, Lawsonia intracellularis.

The process of intensive pig farming is now spreading widely across China, with housing of specific age groups into separate units composed of breeding, nursery or fattening pigs. Under these circumstances, infections with well-adapted porcine pathogen agents like Lawsonia intracellularis are recognized as important economic problems that need to be controlled.
