Swine fever suspected at Indian college farm 02 Oct 2006

Tests conducted at the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, India, have indicated swine fever as the cause of pig deaths at the farm of the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (CoVAS), Mannuthy, a suburb of Thrissur, in the South of India.

 

So far, about 130 pigs died at the pig farm, another 30 were in a critical condition. Upon discovery, the affected pigs have been isolated.

 

Strict measures to contain the infection have been launched in the farm. All those associated with the farm have been given awareness classes on the steps to be taken.

 

Samples collected from the affected pigs have been taken to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) in Bareli, Uttar Pradesh, for further checking.
