Organic pork in Australian market 05 Oct 2007

For its Wooroloo processing facility, PPC Linley Valley Fresh which is part of the Craig Mostyn Group, has been given organic certification by the National Association for Sustainable Agriculture Australia (NASAA).


Addressing demand
Ron Penn, general manager of PPC commented that the company was leading the market in addressing demand in the organic pork market in both Australia and overseas with particular emphasis on Singapore where PPC is currently the top Australian pork supplier.


Penn stated further that PPC works alongside producers in Australia in order to develop the industry for all parties and this is the reason why PPC has sought organic accreditation.


Few changes were necessary at the plant for certification as the facility is modern", according to Julia Zubko, PPC technical manager.


Wihout stress
Henceforth, at PPC organic pigs will be processed each morning and these carcasses will be stored separately. Zubko stated that processing will be carried out quickly and without stress to the pigs.


Producers, on their side, have the responsibility to feed only organic feed to their stock, to provide them with adequate shelter and to house their stock 'on ground' densities


PPC's Wooroloo plant processes around 98% pork in Western Australia. The company spent in 2007 over AUD $4m (€2.5m) in modernising its boning room to the highest Australian standard.
