Swine fever could cost Smithfield $5 million 10 Aug 2007
The outbreak of Classical Swine Fever (CSF) at two
Smithfield farms in Romania could cost the company $4 million to $5 million,
officials say.
Last week, Romania's Veterinary Health Authority
identified CSF on two Smithfield production sites, one near Cenei and one near
the Hungarian border.
Altogether, over 36,000 pigs have been
euthanised and the site cleaned up.
Tests at additional Smithfield
farms in the country have been negative.
Smithfield is the country's
largest pork producer in the western part, with 25 farms and a $1.1 billion
investment.
Smithfield has been very active in Eastern Europe lately.
The company is also investing in pig production sites in
Poland.
