Electronic detection of pig fever 02 May 2007

The company from Lelystad, the Netherlands, recently launched a so-called 'Templant' transmitter. With this device, pig fever symptoms can be noticed very quickly - and thus cases of Classical Swine Fever (CSF) and Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD).


Saving money
According to the company, pig producers can save a lot of money by just giving a transmitter to every tenth pig.


"Should a pig producer detect a disease quickly, he can fight it quickly as well, thus improving the animals' technical results. Early detection of a contagious animal disease is even more rewarding," Telemetronics director Gerard van Essen said.


CSF outbreak
The CSF outbreak in 1997 cost about €3 to 4 billion for Dutch pig industry. "Using Templant, we would discover CSF in only half of the 6.5 to seven weeks, necessary for detection. This could reward billions."
