PCV2 – growing evidence strain mutation might be the cause of PMWS

There is growing evidence that PMWS (post-weaning multisystemic wasting disease) was caused by a mutant PCV2 (porcine circovirus type 2) strain, which was more pathogenic and was able to express the disease more severely.

Between a rock and a hard place – difficult one for the EFSA

Presumably, it is the responsibility of the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) to reduce the incidence of Campylobacter and Salmonella food poisoning in man across Europe. Just when it approves of the use of certain antimicrobial substances (sounds more like disinfectants to me) for treating poultry carcasses, which tend to carry these infectious agents, a storm has arisen that it will let in US poultry meat. Who would be a politician?

Responsibility sharing / cost sharing – the future of animal health in Europe?

There are active consultations going on in the UK on responsibility sharing, between the livestock industry and government – and the inevitable cost sharing. It is part of an EU Animal Health Strategy initiative but what is happening in other European countries?

Health and productivity – ‘Disease control is king’

‘Disease control is king’ and ‘Pigs are precious’ were two of the remarks made by John Dean, professor at Minnesota State University at a recent conference in Rovereto, N. Italy. Analysis of the major components of production profitability variation were the CDL group (culls, deads and lightweights) which accounted for 55%, followed by feed conversion efficiency (FCE) at 28% and finally average daily (ADG) gain, 17%.

Controlling high levels of PRDC mortality with PCV2 vaccines

On a recent visit to Korea, where the average number of pigs finished/sow/year is about 13 and the mortality is caused primarily by the porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC), I was asked if the new PCV2 vaccines would solve the problem?

Another link in the grain price chain – barrels of oil

The link between the price of a barrel of oil, biofuel production and the grain price was described in a recent paper – if the cost of a barrel of oil stays high, don’t expect grain prices to fall sharply.

How much do different meats contribute to salmonellosis in man?

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has just reported on how much do different meats contribute to salmonellosis in man and they have found it very difficult to conclusively attribute the level from different meat sources. They appeared to agree that eggs and egg products were the most frequently implicated sources but were not sure about the risk from poultry, pork, beef and lamb – so let’s have a go.

Salmonella food poisoning – more good news for the pig industry?

Salmonella species are the second most common cause of food poisoning in man after Campylobacter spp, affecting over 13,400 people in the UK each year, but the latest report on Salmonella in Livestock Production in Great Britain (VLA, 2007) shows that only a small fraction (<1.8%) of human infections can be associated with pig isolates.

Campylobacter food poisoning – good news for pigs!

Campylobacter species are the commonest cause of food poisoning in man, affecting over 50,000 people in the UK and 69/100,000 population in Denmark each year, but Danish researchers have shown that potentially, only a small fraction of pig isolates are associated with man and these strains are also found in poultry, which appears to be a major source.

Enzootic pneumonia – is it a good time to consider eradication?

With costs rising rapidly due to increases in feed prices, is it a good time to focus on improving health and considering eradication of such production depressing diseases as enzootic pneumonia?
