Vaccination against Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae in outdoor swine production

Joint disease is painful for the pig and causes 30 % of all condemnations at slaughter in Sweden. Most common reasons for joint disease are infectious arthritis and osteochondrosis. Erysipelothrix rhusiophatiae is one of the most common bacterial agents involved in swine arthritis especially in outdoor pig production (1, 2).

In comparison with conventional pig production, outdoor pigs suffer 3 times more observations for arthritis at slaughter (3). Despite this there are relatively few producers of outdoor pigs that vaccinate their slaughter pigs against erysipelas. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of vaccinating outdoor slaughter pigs against erysipelas on the number of infectious arthritis seen at slaughter.
