German swine reproduction figures grew 3% last year
Swine sow reproduction figures have grown by 3% in the economic year 2011-2012.
The Agricultural Market Information Company (AMI) states that on average, sows weaned 26.5 piglets per year, which is a year-on-year increase of 0.8 piglet and the highest figure in the last decade.
AMI makes its calculations on the basis of figures from producer organisations and advisory panels.
The total number of sows was 2.2 million – the lowest in the last decade. About ten years ago, Germany counted 3.0 million sows. The 2.2 million sows produced 58.3 million piglets.
Total numbers of farms having sows decreased as well over the last ten years until now is 17,100 in total.
