Pig Progress part of Future Farming theatre at GFIA

The GFIA is held in cooperation with Proagrica, a global division of Reed Business Information (RBI), specialising in the agriculture industry and publisher of Pig Progress and its sister publications Poultry World, Dairy Global and All About Feed, Boerderij and Farmers Weekly.

Proagrica will have its Future Farming Proagrica Theatre, held over 2 days, at the exhibition ground. At this theatre, new ideas, future farming insights will be shared in the fields of dairy, pig and poultry farming, horticulture and arable farming, each having 3 focus topics. The editors of Proagrica brands will moderate the sessions.

Exciting sessions for pigs at GFIA

For pigs, insightful sessions will take place on:

• Genetics & breeding: At various stages in the breeding process, data are essential. As genetic knowledge is exponentially increasing, entire DNA genomes become available, and genetics companies can select for traits on the basis of present or absent chromosomes. They can select animals for resistance for certain diseases for instance. Computers are essential in this process to find your way in the enormous amount of data that is available.
• Gestation & lactation: Later during the breeding process, and especially in the gestation phase, a great deal of information is becoming available. As breeding animals constitute a farm’s financial backbone, the breeding animals are equipped with eartags, so a lot about them is known and regulated. Using ESF systems, means it is possible to make entire graphs about how much do they weigh, eat etc. At the same time, using computerised systems, it is possible to precisely determine what diets they are on.
• Grow/finishing: A relatively new area, but no less interesting. What happens to animals in their grow-finisher phase? Developments include the storage of vaccination data using an interactive syringe (my own description) on younger pigs. Water consumption can be measured, just like coughing, which in turn could be an indication for health problems.

GFIA: at the centre of the dialogue on how to feed the world

When GFIA was launched in Abu Dhabi in 2014, it was born out of the passion of 40 influential organisations including the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the World Bank, that wanted a platform to start a globally significant dialogue on how we can feed 9 billion people.

The exhibition attracts over 7,500 agtech experts and farmers, 250+ exhibitors showcasing their innovative products, all aimed to improve the food production process. The Future Farming Theatre will be organised at the exhibition during the 2 days (9 and 10 May). Entrance is free of charge for the exhibition.
