Russian vet service: More African Swine Fever in Krasnodar region
While Russia is just recovering from the shock of imminent mass cullings due to reported findings of African Swine Fever in the Tver regions, the Russian federal service for veterinary and phytosanitary surveillance (Rosselkhoznadzor) reported two more outbreaks of African Swine Fever.
These two outbreaks of African Swine Fever (ASF) were reported to be found in the Krasnodar region in southern Russia. In total, about 9,500 pigs will have to be culled.
One outbreak of ASF was registered in the Krasnoarmeysk district of Krasnodar region in the farm with the total stock of about 3,900 head, the veterinary service reported.
Message
The official message stated: “The ASF virus was detected during the study of samples of pathological material, selected by the specialists of Kropotkin veterinary laboratory from dead pigs in the farm of pig-breeding company Krasnodar fattening complex. The complex is located two km north-west of the village Marianské of the Marianské rural settlement of the Krasnoarmeyskiy district of Krasnodar region, as well as 60 km from Krasnodar.”
“The farm contains 3,900 pigs of different age groups. In total, in the Krasnoarmeysk district there are 24,400 head of pigs, of which 21,700 head in public farms and 2,700 head in private farms of citizens,” added Rosselkhoznadzor.
The message also stated that the distance from the outbreak to the nearest pig farm owned by the company Dan Cube (owned by the Danish Fund Dan-Invest), which contains more than 11,000 pigs, is about five km. This is a critical distance, so all pig stock at the farm are at risk. Currently, according to instructions of Rosselkhoznadzor, after the notification of an outbreak all pig stock in a 5 km radius around it ought to be culled.
Other outbreak
On Thursday July, 26, Rosselkhoznadzor reported an additional outbreak of ASF, in agricultural farm Kuban in Ust-Labinsk area, which contains about 23,000 head of pigs. There are about 5,600 pigs in the farm and all of them will be culled.
Last week, the Russian veterinary service announced record cullings due to reported ASF outbreaks in the Tver region, north west of Moscow. (By Vladislav Vorotnikov)
