DEGARO FARM: Romania

Running a promising and profitable pig farm in Romania can feel like pioneering. But, Danish pig investment company DCH International has done just that, responsible for three farms, with a total of 7,500 sows. Pig Progress took a look at DCH's latest project, Degaro.

  • In many gestation, farrowing and growing houses in the facility, the Danish team modernised equipment inside, e.g. added new slatted floors and new feeding systems. The total breeding complex consists of eight long houses of 120 x 18 m.

  • One of the more structural additions was the construction of these corridors between the pig houses. Any pig transport now has to happen through these corridors, avoiding pigs running to everywhere - thus increasing biosecurity.

  • Some of the pig houses had not been renovated by Campofrio - and there the Danish investors undertake some more profound reconstructions. The Danish style can be recognised by the size of their pens.

  • All breeding is done on-site, so no new genetic material needs to be imported. The boar stud contains a large number of (Duroc) boars, to be used for collection. The total farm has an Specific Pathogen Free health status.

  • The farm is equipped with 2013 proof stalls. These sows have just been inseminated and are waiting to be released into group housing.

  • Two long pig houses are allocated to grower pigs. These long houses consist of rooms, each containing about 1,000 grower pigs, between 7 and 30 kg. Each room consists of eight pens of 130 pigs.

  • Currently, new heating systems are being put in place in these growing houses. This is dearly needed since in Romania winters, temperatures can drop low. During the reconstruction, additional heaters (top right) were temporarily added.

  • The grower pigs receive a mixture of wheat, barley, milk powder, soy and sunflower cake, the last being the most affordable source of protein available.

  • Pigs will stay here until they weigh 115 kg liveweight. They are sold to an auction, yielding up to 1.50 euro per kg/ slaughterweight.
